  • Robe à la Polonaise
Robe retroussée dans les poches, 1780s.
The robe retroussée dans les poches appeared when the English custom of walking in the countryside became fashionable among the French. The skirts were pulled through the slits for the pockets (hence the name) and “practically” arranged at the back. This style later developed into the robe à la Polonaise.

  • As requested the other day, two wonderful examples of Northern Renaissance hairstyles. Also notice the dress (and the jacket in the first painting), the sleeves, the gloves, the necklaces!
By Lucas Cranach the Elder, Judith Victorious with a hairnet and the same Judith with her hair let down. Both paintings were made around 1530.

Children’s four-piece ensemble from 1876 with three options for the upper body, two jackets and one bodice.
This reminds me of a school girl’s uniform!

  • As shown by this 1885 ensemble, it was common for children’s clothing to have hints of the stylish bustle of the 1880s without the full-blown aspect of the silhouette.

  • Young Woman with a Pink, ca. 1485–90
Attributed to Hans Memling (Netherlandish, active about 1465, died 1494)
Here for more info.
(I am not very knowledgeable about the Medieval/Renaissance/Baroque fashions. In fact, anything before 1700 is likely to puzzle me. I really do hope the pictures I selected are relevant to vulvazuela’s request.)

  • This extant example of a riding habit is very similar to the one depicted in my previous post, having been tailored approximately in the same period (1770-1775).

  • rose-apology asked: Do you have any pictures of uniforms girls were required to wear at school?

October 1943. “Washington, D.C. Saddle shoes are still popular at Woodrow Wilson High School.”

Freshmen in Chemistry, Washington circa 1925.

Washington, D.C., circa 1914. “Georgetown University Hospital graduating nurses.”

    Girls’ basketball team, circa 1917

Lastly, an interesting picture from Eaton School, Washington D.C., circa 1910. I know you didn’t ask for boy’s uniforms, but for some reason I like this photo quite a lot. The first boy on the left seems to be wearing some kind of “antediluvian” Converse shoes.

All pictures from shorpy.com. Hope this helped :)

  • This dress from between 1885 and 1888 would have been worn for tennis, yachting or general seaside walking. Striped textiles were fashionable for such activities, probably due to the nautical theme. Although the silhouette remained the same, with the exception of the shorter, more maneuverable length, the trimmings were reduced. This is a striking example of this type of dress, which is fairly rare in museum collections.
